ECOSOC

Topic: The impact of the CFA franc monetary union on Central and West African states’ development

Difficulty: Medium

Introduction to ECOSOC

Economic and Social Council

ECOSOC, also known as the UN Economic and Social Council, is one of the 6 main organs of the United Nations. It usually deals with issues relating to economics, society, sustainable development, and culture, and is made up of 54 countries, each of which serves a 3-year term; this ensures that all member states of the UN get their voices heard, with decisions still getting made efficiently and promptly.

Introduction to the Topic

The CFA franc monetary union was founded in 1945 as a response to France’s involvement in the Bretton Woods Agreement, affecting the economies of multiple Central and Western African countries. There is quite a public divergence of opinions between multiple African and European leaders regarding the effects of these currencies on the countries’ economies and their independence, with some even going as far as to call it a form of “modern colonialism”. What can be done to inhibit the negative effects on development?

Chairpersons

Cristian Dinuta

Hello! My name is Cristian Dinuta and I’m a junior at ‘George Cosbuc’ Bilingual National College. I’ve been MUN-ing since 2019, and I’ve had the pleasure to occupy several positions, such as delegate, chair, and even Secretary-General of @cosbuc.mun.

I cannot wait to meet you and have an unforgettable experience in the ECOSOC committee.

Mihnea Pasere

Hello everyone, my name is Mihnea and I am a junior at George Cosbuc Billingual National High in Bucharest. IBSBMUN will be my first ever chairing experience and I am more than glad to be sharing it with one of my best friends, Cristi. ECOSOC is one of the two committees that I enjoy taking part in the most and those who know me also know how much I love representing the French Republic, so when I saw this edition’s topic, I jumped at the opportunity to be a chairperson in this committee.

I am looking forward to this experience and am very eager to meet all prospective ECOSOC delegates. Hopefully, we’ll all see each other in February!
