International Criminal Court

Topic: The Prosecutor vs Omar Al-Bashir

Difficulty: Advanced

Introduction to the ICC

The International Criminal Court investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression.

It is made up of 18 judges, elected for 9-year terms by the Assembly of State Parties, one President, and two Vice-Presidents; at our conference, we will follow a similar format, and as such, delegates will not represent countries, but will be split into two groups: the judges, who will be in charge of determining the final verdict, and the advocates, who will represent the Prosecution and the Defendant and will argue their case.

Introduction to the Topic

President of the Republic of Sudan since 16 October 1993, Omar Hassan Ahmad Al Bashir stands at 5 crimes against humanity, two counts of war crimes, 3 counts of genocide, all allegedly committed between 2003 and 2008, in Darfur, Sudan. Having received his first arrest warrant in 2009, its execution is pending, and the suspect still remains at large in spite of the arrest warrants issued against him; this means that the case is still in pre-trial, until he is found and brought into the courtroom. Will the ICC convict him for his alleged crimes?

Chairpersons

Iris Grigoras

Hello everyone! My name is Iris and I will be one of the  Chairpersons of the International Criminal Court at IBSBMUN 2022. Having started my MUN journey over two years ago, I have had a taste of almost every committee, however, when you couple this with my boundless interest for international law, it becomes apparent that I am most attracted to legal-related committees. Being incredibly passionate about everything I’m involved in and benefiting from a perfectionist persona, I am sure that, together with my fellow chairpersons, we will be able to provide the delegates of the ICC with an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait to see all of you at the conference!

Ever since my first ICJ committee, I’ve fallen in love with international law and its intricacies. I’m more than excited for this edition of IBSB MUN and I can’t wait to meet you all!

See you at the conference!
